How to Succeed in the Student Design Competition How to Succeed in the Student Design Competition The ASME Student Design Competition is an excellent opportunity for you to exercise your new engineering skills, have some fun, impress student colleagues and come to the attention of industry representatives and recruiters. For many of you it is also the means for satisfying one of your graduation requirements.As organizers, we want you to succeed at your konzeption task. A device which does bedrngnis perform at the contest is a disappointment to everyone (even though occasionally the failures have been very entertaining). These suggestions are offered here for your consideration, and to help you have a successful contest experience.Read them at your peril.(1) Obtain a Mentor. We strongly recommend that each team recruit a practicing konzeption engineer from a local ASME Section. These mentors can provide a great wealth of advice and experience to you. Often students have limited experi ence managing teams, budgets, schedules and the like. A mentor with years of experience in the real world would be an invaluable team asset. It may be advantageous to find a mentor at a local company who can offer you technical advice and possible funding.(2) Get a team together. These design problems are intended for a team of 2 to 4 students to work on. If you plan to try doing it all yourself be prepared to do a lot of work. Also, most problems involve at least some technical hintergrund normally found in the junior and senior level courses, so you want at least some of your team to be upper-classmen or upper-classwomen.(3) Start Early. It takes a lot of time to design, build, test, rebuild, test, fix, test.... Probably if you estimate the time you think you will need then double it you will be coming close. Triple your estimated time and you are most lik ely there. Note If you estimate wrong and finish early there is no penalty. If you finish late, however, you are out of the contest. Starting too late on the project probably causes more failures at the contest than anything else. See the suggested schedule below.(4) Start working on at least two approaches in the early design stages. Dont grab the first working idea you get and run with it. Make yourself think about other possible approaches.(5) Build in adjustments. Do you have a critical dimension, such as a belt centerline distance? Or a problem aligning a motor with what it must drive? Build such things as belt tensioning pulleys, slotted screw holes for adjustment, flexible couplings, etc. Remember that dimensions and lengths can change with temperature, moisture, time, etc. Can you correct for these changes with easy, quick, last-minute adjustments?(6) Test and Test and Test. Once you have a working device your next assignment is to find out what makes it NOT work. Can you qu ickly and repeatedly disassemble it and reassemble it and have it still work? Does it work on all floor or test surfaces? What happens if (or when) it gets dropped? Could someone not on your design team make your device work without help from you (other than general operating instructions)?(7) Reliability here is the name of the game, and it only comes about from testing and modifying. Dont allow yourself to baby your design to get it to work. If your device does not work without tender care and careful adjustment it probably will not work at the contest. Remember, if it works 4 out of 5 times when you try to complete the given task there is only a 64% chance that it will work for both runs at the contest (unless something happens in the first run which influences the result of the second run) In other words, there is a one-in-three chance that you will fail at the contest. To have a 95% chance of making both runs at the contest your device needs to succeed 97.5% of the times you pr ess the start buttonor about 48 out of 50 times. In these contests a reliable device which operates at moderate speed almost always beats a semi-reliable device which is blazingly fast.(8) Turn your development device into a finished product. Once you have gotten all the bugs out of your device using a developmental or breadboard model it is time to put together the final device for the contest. At this time you should clean up wiring and other loose ends. Aside from purely aesthetic grounds, for example, neat cabled wiring with good connectors is more reliable than a lot of loose wires with point-to-point wiring. Remember that your colleagues and possible future employers will be looking at your device and forming an opinion of you from what they see. Vocal Cord / Larynx Disqualifications The Larynx is the hollow muscular organ forming an air passage to the lungs and holding-gesellschaft the vocal cords in humans and other mammals it is also known as the voice box. It is quite the complex organ in the body as it is responsible for human language and vocalization which enabled us to advance as a species.The larynx is made up of six pieces of cartilage and 17 muscles that are also connected to nerves that enable speech and other vocal utterances. When the larynx is damaged or congenitally defective it can be difficult for someone to speak, speak loudly, or even protect the trachea and prevent food / liquid from entering the lungs. The disqualifying factors of the larynx are the following Current chronic conditions of larynx including vocal cord paralysis (478.3), chronic hoarseness, chronic laryngitis, larynx ulceration, polyps, granulation tissue, or other symptomatic disease of larynx, vocal cord dysfunction not elsewhere classified (478.7) are disqualifying. Loss of Smell Anosmia is the inability to perceive odor or the complete loss of the sense of smell. Anosmia may be temporary, but some forms that stem from an illness or accident, can be permanent. Current anosmia or parosmia (781.1) is disqualifying. Parasmia is similar to anosmia, but it often means the patient confuses the smell of something with something else. For instance, a rose may smell like sewer water to a pers on with parosmia.Both of these ailments are disqualifying within military medicine. Bloody Nose and Polyps If a candidate or recruit has reoccurring instances of bloody noses not brought on by immediate trauma, this is called a history of recurrent epistaxis (784.7). If you get a bloody nose more than once per week of bright red blood from the nose occurring over a 3-month period, is disqualifying. Also, if a candidate has a history of nasal polyps it can be disqualifying.The exact regulation on nasal polyps reads as followsCurrent nasal polyps (471) or history of nasal polyps, unless greater than 12 months has elapsed since nasal polypectomy, is disqualifying. Septum Issues A hole in the septum of the nose if not treated and is current (478.1) is disqualifying. A perforated septum is not always symptomatic. However, a hole in the septum can cause nosebleeds, and breathing issues. Chewing, Swallowing, Speech, Breathing Impact Obviously, any issue that causes disruption o r difficulty with chewing, swallowing, speech, or breathing with respect to the nose and throat will be challenging to pass military medicine upon entry. Current or history of tracheostomy (V44.0) or tracheal fistula (530.84) is disqualifying. Current or history of deformities, or conditions or anomalies (750.9) of the upper alimentary tract, of the mouth, tongue, palate throat, pharynx, larynx, and nose that interfere with chewing, swallowing, speech, or breathing are disqualifying. Current chronic pharyngitis (462) and chronic nasopharyngitis (472.2), are disqualifying.
