Do Job Seekers Need a Premium LinkedIn Account

Do Job Seekers Need a Premium LinkedIn Account Linkedin have offered premium accounts to the greater public for some time now. These have been popular with salespeople and recruiter  for years. Congratulations to all the job seekers out there, its your turn to face the big question: Do I need to upgrade my LinkedIn account? Is the free account good enough? Tempting as it may be to upgrade, nobody is saying the regular LinkedIn account is bad. In fact, I believe LinkedIn have purposely made the free accounts good enough to keep building their member base as opposed to charging users. Other platforms like Viadeo and Xing are more inclined to charge their members money and havent grown as much. Heres what you get with the normal (free) LinkedIn account: Build your professional identity on the web. Build and maintain a large trusted professional network. Find and reconnect with colleagues and classmates. Request and provide recommendations. Request up to 5 introductions at a time. Search for and view profiles of other LinkedIn members. Receive unlimited InMail messages. View 100 results per search. Save up to 3 searches and get weekly alerts on those searches. Did you do three of the above points last week? How about last month? Most people wouldnt use all these features and therefore  theres no reason to even think about upgrading.  However if you do these actions regularly and hit ceilings such as running out of search results, then it might be time to consider a premium account. What do you get with a premium account? Heres what you get with the premium job seeker account: A full 90 day list of viewers and rich data insights like the keywords that led people to your profile. See how you rank among your industry peers with the How You Rank “Professionals Like You” tool. When you’re on the job hunt, get the inside scoop on how you stack up against other job applicants with Applicant Insights. When someone searches for you on LinkedIn, you’ll be shown as a standard listing in results. Your job applications will appear above those of non-premium members. Banish writer’s block for good with Keyword Suggestions for the Summary section of your profile. Use up to 8 additional filters to fine-tune and expedite your searches. With InMail, you can contact anyone on LinkedIn   from the recruiter who just viewed your profile to that hiring manager. Is it really worth it? If you use LinkedIn daily and have hit a wall where you have run out options, go ahead and try it. As long as you get useful incremental results, stick with it until you get that new job. This is assuming that you have the money to spend, check your budget and ideally cut back on something else instead. What is your experience of premium job seeker accounts? Please let us know!

What Facebooks IPO means for women

What Facebooks IPO means for women After the Facebook IPO, Sheryl Sandberg will become number two on the list of richest self-made women. She is the COO of Facebook. For those of you not familiar with her career, theres a nice summary in the New York Times. But the bottom line is that she is really smart (Harvard), a really hard worker (startups, Google, Facebook), a great speaker (heres a commencement speech) ,and shes married to a guy who is also making tons of money in startups. There is nothing, really, that is bad to say about Sandberg. And she works very hard to encourage other women to go as far as she has gone. The problem is, very few women want to be Sandberg, but there is very little discussion of this. Sandberg has two young kids. She runs a company that is very public about having lock-ins to move fast enough to compete with Google, and they have open hours for kids to come to Facebook offices to say goodnight to their parents, who are working very long hours. She encourages women to have ambition and never take their foot off the gas pedal, but very, very few women would choose to do this after they have kids. Pew Research shows that the majority of women would like to work part-time after they have kids. So its hard to tell that demographic that they should work 100-hour weeks at startups instead. Its revealing that the New York Times profile of Sandberg shows her surrounded by men who are only marginally involved in raising their kids. Obama, for instance, is shown kissing her on the cheek. At that moment, presumably, Michelle Obama was with his kids. Because Michelle has been very clear that he is almost never with their kids, and shes pissed, and she has confessed to screaming at him that she didnt sign up to be a single mother. In fact, she quit her job so she could manage the family while her husbands career took off. Sandberg is also pictured with Jeff Immelt, CEO of GE. I was so struck by his lack of involvement with his kids that I wrote a whole post about it, here. He has a wife at home taking care of his kids. Sandberg is pictured with Mayor Bloomberg, who is divorced and single, and left raising his daughters largely to his ex-wife. Sandbergs husband is not a stay-at-home husband. He has a big career of his own. Meg Whitman also had a husband with a big career, but when she became the very high-profile CEO of eBay, he stepped down to take care of their sons. Sandbergs husband doesnt appear to be doing that. I have a friend who was a direct report to Sandberg. He had nothing but good things to say about her, but when I pressed for how she could possibly be getting this done with young kids, he said there are multiple nannies. This makes sense. When I had a big jobnothing compared to SandbergsI had two nannies. Because if you travel you have to have around-the-clock coverage. Sandberg wants to be a role model for women who want big, exciting careers. But heres the problem: women dont want to be Sandberg. Its no coincidence that the number-one woman on the list of self-made millionaires is Oprah. She has no kids and no husband. Shes fascinating, nice, and smart. But few of us would really enjoy her life. Sandberg and Oprah represent extreme choices in life. The things they give up are not things that most women would want to give up in exchange for the wild career success they could have. Sandbergs right when she says that the thing holding women back is womens ambition. But I dont see that changing any time soon. Even after the Facebook IPO. Im afraid that what the Facebook IPO means for women is nothing. Sandberg is not a role model. Shes an aberration. You cant have small kids and a startup if you want to see your kids. I wrote about this on TechCrunch and I got skewered for being bad for women and being a downer in general. But this week Jeff Atwood wrote in Tech Crunch that hes leaving his startup because its impossible to see his kids if he stays. And I dont see anyone complaining about his declaration. So probably Sheryl Sandberg is not doing much for women, but Im pretty sure Jeff Atwood is, because its not as hard to say The startup is too hard on my kids when men are saying it, too.

What not to wear to a job interview. Career Coach JobJenny

What not to wear to a job interview. Career Coach JobJenny When I return from my honeymoon......and I'm not SO VERY BUSYdeciding between beach lounger, poolside lounger and veranda hammock... I'll tell you all about the candidate I had a few years ago. Who wore a cowboy hat into a job interview (he was not interviewing to be a cowboy. It was an engineering position.) And refused to take it off. (no, in fact, he did not get the job) Bold = good. The fashion statement pictured, however, reminds me of my cowboy hat wearing candidate. And brings me to the very clear point that: Bold = good. Belligerent, weird, obnoxious? That would equal bad. And weird. And abnormal. And counterproductive. YES... I will make the loud and clear statement that your job search needs to involve bold, creative, strategicmethods. But if you bust out the cowboy hat or sombrero at an interview? And then refuse to remove it? I cannot at all be responsible for the outcome. Just know. I cannot. :) Cheers everyone! See you soon!

Tips For Resume Writing Style Guide

Tips For Resume Writing Style GuideMany people want to find a resume writing style guide but don't know where to look. There are many websites that offer help for writers. However, these sites do not provide a resume writing style guide. Instead, they offer help to writers on how to write their resume. There are various tips on the internet that can assist a writer in writing a successful resume. Some tips may be helpful but others are not.One major difference between a resume and a cover letter is the format. The format of a resume and cover letter should be very similar. If you do not follow this advice, you will find that your resume will be rejected by many employers.Another tip is to use a professional resume writing style. There are companies out there that have prepared templates for you to use. This does not mean that your resume will be rejected if you do not have one.A resume writing style is different from hiring a writing service to prepare your resume. These professionals can be expensive. They can also be more professional than you would be at your own expenses. You will find that your resume will not be accepted if it is submitted with spelling errors. The resume must be clean and free of any grammatical errors. Be sure to keep a record of your job experiences to prove that you have relevant work experience to demonstrate your abilities. You do not want a resume rejected because of a typographical error. To get more copies of your resume, you can ask for them to be mailed to you. You should not write down the cover letter or resume to be included on your application. These documents are important and you need to save copies of all three documents. Finally, you should not use the same resume for each company that you apply to. Employers will make sure that they read your resume when you get their call for an interview. You should know what is required on your resume. You should never send an empty resume.

The Real Deal with Women Today - Kathy Caprino

The Real Deal with Women Today As so much national research is revealing, women are sadder and sicker than ever before, and more so in midlife than in other times of their lives.     Here’s recent Huffington Post piece about the sad and shocking truth about women.   There’s speculation abounding about why, but no real answers.   Further, with men still being named the research experts on women (so irksome!), the headway is slow in uncovering the real truth.   Based on my seven years of research with thousands of women nationwide, there are seven hidden reasons why women are struggling deeply today, and failing to find success, health, joy, or purpose:   1)             An Ill-Fitted Career Model: The current competitive career model simply doesn’t fit women   2)             An Extreme Overload: The current gender roles don’t work â€" women are still doing the vast majority of domestic responsibility even when they work or are the primary breadwinners   3)             “Who can I look up to?”   There are very few female role models â€" from the past or present of successful, happy, powerful and healthy women who work and raise a family   4)             “I’m not supposed to!”   Women are culturally trained NOT to do the things required of them to lead happy, healthy, powerful lives (including: speaking up, feeling confident and powerful, displaying self-esteem and leadership, knowing what you want and having an intensive focus in getting it, putting yourself first, etc.)   5)             “What do I choose?” Women are paralyzed by all the options in front of them (children, work, domestic responsibilities, rising to high ranks, working out of the home or in, having their own business vs. corporate job, etc).   6)             “I’m ashamed.” â€" Women feel guilt and shame about where they are and what they feel today, and about pursuing steps that will help them gain power and self-actualization   7)             Women Are Tough on Women â€" Women are very hard on themselves and other women critical and punishing in their actions and beliefs especially to other women.   Why?   Because they’re struggling and have been for years, and people who are in pain and struggling are not generous and giving.   All of these obstacles hit women hard.   Men do not face these crises in the same ways.     Wake up world!!   Women are radically different from men and that’s a good thing!   They differ in their values, priorities, dreams, styles, visions, but they’re told somehow that  its not ok to be different.   Women are struggling hard, but ashamed of their differences, and continually hide or deny their suffering.   The time is now!   Let’s help women step up to what they truly want, to create a breakthrough in how they live and work.   For this to happen, women must accept who they are authentically, power up and step up to get what they want, and stop making excuses.   It’s time for women to give themselves permission to choose the life of their dreams, and get 3000% committed to having it!   Please reach out today (crisis is the perfect time to reinvent) if you need a breakthrough in your life.   Take advantage of my FREE 30-minute coaching strategy call to help you 1) gain clarity on what you want, 2) understand what’s holding you back, 3) create a powerful plan to achieve your goals.     Every day you don’t move toward breakthrough, is a day that’s stolen from your life.   What are you waiting for?

The Basics of Branding - Getting Memorable

The Basics of Branding - Getting Memorable There are a few things you can do to make your brand memorable and exciting. It can be more than easy to get a little bit lost in all of the information from bigger companies that have already made it. Often they will miss out the essential ingredients of what made them a success. Some of this will depend on if you are a solopreneur or you’re building a business that you intend to be the umbrella for many, some of it applies to anyone who is starting a business. So let’s tuck into the meat of the subject. Branding should show some personality, preferably your own, but it should be relatable in such a way that people respond emotionally to it. Great examples of how a simple branding decision can lead to being instantly recognizable are Innocent smoothies, and Tom Ford. Both have very clean fonts, simple colors, and straight away are associated with their products. Pick bold, solid colours. According to a study by the secretariat of the Seoul International Colour Expo, 92% of people think that the visual aspects of the brands are most important. And, no obvious factor is more important than the colour of the logo itself. Colours provoke specific emotional and mental responses to the point where tone can be a second language. Good examples are how red is associated with romance, passion and love ( think valentine’s day), white is connected with peace and purity. There is a long list which is really worth taking a look at depending on what you want your brand to say. Here are seven design tips to help you when it comes to your packaging choices and how the colour choice will impact that too. “Branding demands commitment; commitment to continual re-invention; striking chords with people to stir their emotions; and commitment to imagination. It is easy to be cynical about such things, much harder to be successful.” â€" Sir Richard Branson Use Social Media to reinforce your message and ethos continually. The utter beauty of social media is that usually the people using it are in a receptive and open mood. Meaning that if you approach them with a relaxed and friendly tone, the likely response is that the will click the link you have shared or share it with their own followers. Social means social, and although it is a robust platform for marketing, you shouldn’t approach it just as a marketing tool, it should be thought of more as a way to connect and communicate with your audience WITHOUT the continual force-feeding of adverts. Of course, this is actually a delicate balance of visuals, conversational content, easily shareable memes and curated content from other media sources. Once you have done all of that, then you can add more advertorial items. Aside from making sure you are catering well for your audience concerning engaging content, you need to check on which platform you are performing the best on. If you a highly visual brand with visual products, Instagram is going to be a strong point for you, and if it isn’t it is worth the time to make sure it is. If you are great at conversation, then Twitter will be your bag. Use Facebook primarily to drive traffic to your websites and other social media. Make it accessible to your audience. There is no point having a product ready to go, but charing too uch. Your audience needs to be able to afford your product, as well as know where to get it. You also need to convey that to them in the straplines, try and think of a tagline that is short, snappy and informative. Don’t think of it like just a product think of it as a lifestyle you are selling. The brand is something people buy into to belong to a particular class, group or ‘type’ of person. Consider how Ray Ban use the images of celebrities and influencers to promote who is wearing specific items, on their Instagram â€" to sell the high-flying lifestyle of Victoria Beckham, Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio. It is about how the product or service makes you feel, and what they say to others about you. Everything you send out will have your branding on it, so a few things to think about when it comes to your printed stuff. The stronger your contrasting colours, the more powerful your message will be. The trinity, use three colours are imprinted in peoples minds more efficiently and for longer.
